Hi,

I am trying to design a sulfur trioxide absorption column in the context of a fourth year chemical engineering plant design course at the University of Ottawa. The column would be a packed bed column with sulfur trioxide flowing upward and couter current to 98.5% sulfuric acid. The main difficulty arises from the presence of the liquid phase reaction of sulfur trioxide with the sulfuric acid to form oleum as an intermediate. From my initial litterature review, it seems like the design of this kind of absorber is unusual and probably only well understood by industry members. I would appreciate any help as to were I could find more information on design procedures for that specific system, and what are the common challenges associated with this unit.

Again, any usefull information would be well appreciated,

Jerome
