With Sulfuric at 90% can you use a carbon steel tank? Stainless steel tank?

Thanks

Carbon steel is a suitable material of construction for storing 90% sulphuric acid at ambient temperatures. 90% is an unusual concentration to be using. Why 90%? What are the chances that acid of lower concentration will be present?

Using stainless steel is also acceptable but will be considerably more expensive. If the tank is 'small', stainless might be a good option but carbon steel might be a better option in terms of costs if you are storing thousands of tonnes of acid.

Some things to consider when specifying the tank:
- specify a generous corrosion allowance
- consider applying a coating/lining to the inside to extend the life of a carbon steel tank
- pay attention to the design details to prevent some of the common problems that occur in storage tanks (i.e. placement of nozzles, nozzle liners, roof joints, etc.

You can use a carbon steel vertical tank lined with acid proof bricks at the bottom and sides.1.5" thich lining is O.K.at the side and a 3' or 1.5" thick lining can be used at the bottom. . A carbn steel cover can be used with internal epoxy coating .

Sulfuric Acid above 85% concentration could be in storage on CS without ptoblrms if you can manage this three factors:
01.- Humidity
02.- Turbulence
03.- Temperature.
If you do so, you will have a very lasting storage tank.
if not, it will fail in very short time.
If you can not, the best way to do it is with Brick, Mortar and Membrane.
